Organic Peppermint Tea FAQs

What is peppermint tea made from?

The organic peppermint tea at Tea Tonic is quite simply made from pure peppermint leaves, with no additions. Peppermint is a common plant many of us have in our garden. It is a natural hybrid of spearmint and watermint. Whilst peppermint can be consumed freshly picked from the garden, the process of drying it into tea form enriches its flavour.

Does peppermint tea contain caffeine?

No, peppermint tea contains zero caffeine, which makes it a great beverage choice for those needing to limit their caffeine intake, and/or wanting to relax before sleep.

Should I drink my peppermint tea straight, or mix it?

Peppermint tea is very satisfying when taken on its own, however you can add other elements to your cup. For example, if you add a slice of fresh lemon to your cup of peppermint tea, you actually increase your body’s absorption of iron from the tea (a cup of peppermin tea provides an 8% of your RDI of iron). Other citrus, such as orange, lime and grapefruit also marry well with peppermint tea. Additional combinations are peppermint and lavender, peppermint and ginger, peppermint and honey, peppermint and matcha green tea, and even peppermint and cacao.

Let’s not forget to also mention that organic peppermint tea works wonderfully in a summer ice-tea. And if you’re wanting a cocktail, there are some great recipes that include peppermint tea.

How do I brew the perfect cup of peppermint tea?

It’s pretty easy. Just add one teaspoon of loose leaf organic peppermint tea to one cup of hot water (approximately 80℃ is ideal). Steep for 5 minutes to obtain the best flavour.

Alternatively, ditch the measuring spoons and use an organic peppermint teabag. Brew for the same length of time.

Do any of your other teas contain peppermint?

Yes! We have included peppermint leaves in our delicious limited edition Wild Botanical Mint Tea and our Mint Chocolate Chai tea.

Does drinking peppermint tea offer health benefits?

Peppermint tea leaves have a high content of essential oils (0.5%-5.0%), with the predominant essential oils being menthol and mentone. Peppermint leaves are known to assist digestion by encouraging the release of gastric juices. Peppermint leaves are also thought to act as an anti-inflammatory on the body. In addition, peppermint oil is commonly used as a treatment to relieve headaches and migraines, and to clear sinuses and freshen breath.

Note that, whilst peppermint tea is beneficial to many, some people are advised to avoid peppermint tea, especially if it worsens existing symptoms. Some people who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or who experience heartburn, find that peppermint tea either triggers or worsens their symptoms. People should also be wary of drinking excessive amounts of peppermint tea if taking certain medications. Speak with your physician to discuss.

Can I drink peppermint whilst pregnant?

Peppermint tea is considered a safe option to drink whilst pregnant, however there’s limited research on the subject. It’s best, as with any beverage, to drink it only in moderation during pregnancy. You might choose to drink fewer cups per day, or make a more diluted brew.

Is peppermint tea good for acid reflux?

Some people who suffer from acid or reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) don’t have a problem with peppermint tea, whereas others find that a strong cup of peppermint tea exacerbates their symptoms. If you suffer symptoms of GERD after drinking peppermint tea, it might be best to avoid it, or else drink it very weak.

Can peppermint tea help with nausea?

Whilst it depends on the cause of your nausea, peppermint tea may be helpful to some individuals. It is often used to settle an upset stomach and calm the digestive system, so it is certainly worth a try. You might also wish to try a tea containing ginger, which can help with nausea symptoms, such as our organic Turmeric, Beetroot & Ginger Tea, our Organic Lemon Myrtle & Ginger Tea, or our Glew (Ginger, Lemongrass, Echinacea, White Tea) Tea.
